A chance for comradery while shaping your beloved pup into a prime hunting machine
For training days, all participants are expected to…
- Volunteer & Assist: All attendees at training day will be assisting with tasks (bird prep, equipment prep, handling, gunning, etc.) at the discretion of the day’s leader.
- Stay until the last dog runs: As a KM community, we all bring skills and wisdom that may help a handler and his dog progress. All attendees are expected to stay and assist the leader in coaching each pup.
- Bring their own equipment – however, do not hesitate to reach out to members for sharing or borrowing items if necessary. The following is a list of what to bring for training days…
- Shotgun – Hinged frame (break-open) shotguns of conventional gauge will be used in NAVHDA tests. Semi-Autos and pumps are allowed for training days.
- Ammo – shot sizes 6, 7, 7 1/2, 8 + in target loads are allowed. Please no game loads.
- Folding chair
- Articles of Blaze Orange are necessary
- Hunting vest
- Plenty of water for yourself and your dog
- Bird bags or pens if necessary
- All appropriate training equipment, leashes, etc. Look at our comprehensive TRAINING CHECKLIST
Training activities typically begin around 8:00 a.m., depending on the weather. The training day runs until completion. Members are asked to arrive early to help collect the birds for the day.
Training days will occur at the following locations…
UPT/UT Training: County U Grounds/Dundee*
*See Training Day Page for DNR Pass to allow training on County U public land
NA Training: KM Chapter Grounds
A typical day has the Natural Ability level dogs working first in the field. Often, more experienced members are available to help new members and their pups with their training techniques. Utility and Utility prep dogs then split between the other fields and the water sites. This is also a great time to work on socialization with your dog. REMEMBER, Please wear enough BLAZE ORANGE to be seen! Safety is important!
Anyone is welcome to join us at a training day to see what NAVHDA is about.
